Wye
River was founded in a small unheated garage on Kent Island, Maryland
in 1985 by Joe Bernard. Armed with two unique seafood seasonings, Wye River Original
Red and Wye River Spicy Black, Wye River’s sales force of one combed the
local market in a 1976 Ford Van with over 200,000 miles on the odometer.
Store by store, food chain by food chain started carrying Wye River seasonings in the old style tin cans. Sales took off, due in part to an excellent crab harvest and a shortage of the other Maryland mainstay. In August of the same year Wye River developed canned crab soups, a tomato based red formula and a cream of crab, believed to be the first of its kind ever canned.
Over the next 20
years Wye River has added over 40 new items to its line from crab seasoned popcorn
to oyster stew. Our products continue to be manufactured locally, but are now
available all over the United States. Wye River, the heritage, tradition and
